@TheKavernacle is wrong about cybepunk #1
This is the first in a series of videos explaining why I think @TheKavernacle is wrong about cyberpunk and Blade Runner 1982. Please note this is not a "takedown" or personal attack, but a critique of what I regard as flaws in his research methdology and misleading information in his sources. We are both leftists, and I am certain TK would agree with me about Blade Runner 1982's critique of capitalism.

I enjoyed the video very much. While I do believe reddit to generally be a cesspool, I still hold a special place in my heart for askhistorians and bad history. One for being a genuinely useful resource(if it's good enough for the American Historical Association...) and the other for being fun. I hope you weren't too discouraged by the nay-sayers in this comment section. I get where many of them are coming from, but I can see a lot of merit in your work here. Honestly, I would think if you used the sources of the redditors directly and didn't mention reddit at all, very few people would be disagreeing with you. At least, very few reasonable people. And also I was amused by those willing to perhaps accept the factuality of *youtube videos* because someone tried to debunk them with reddit posts. Because, as we all know, youtube holds itself to much higher standards.

I'm from a mixed family, but for many different reasons. About 500 years ago we mixed in Brasil, a Spanish colony. We were not safe as Moroccan and Sephardi Jews. Later we mixed again with black from Suriname.Today we are white, colored or black, living in three continents. Many 'blacks' share the same values and culture as the 'whites'. I don't make a difference, though people who don't know me, are making assumptions without knowing me. I don't care. We're all people. In most respects we're all the same. Within family skin color is the only difference. We share so much. At my work a colleague with a dark skin color had a problem with doing business with some African countries. He lost a lot of money. Your skin color isn't always an advantage. Afrocentrism is denying historical facts. Respect African culture, history and African opportunities instead.

I think your claims of exaggerated numbers of slaves is opinion, and not likely correct. .it would take significant number of slaves to carry arround on a land trek of thousands of miles enough supplies as well as the gold that he gave away and other trinkets during that journet.

I would argue any historical telling that cites a solitary perspective is suspect, and only exists for populist purposes. This includes all academic “afrocentrism”. Further, I would say it is precisely this type of thing which lead to mainstream Netflix documentaries black washing Cleopatra and platforming people whose evidence of such a claim is that her grandmother told her so. We need to move beyond these stupid “Eurocentric” and “Afrocentric” qualifiers, because they’re meaningless. If I come across any historian who didn’t examine all available perspectives of a historical moment or timeline, I will immediately believe they’re ideologically captured and attempting to create or spread propaganda. The only exception I would make is if there are no outside accounts available to consider.

Do we know anything about how exactly the statues looked like when painted? A common reaction when seeing a painted replica is "Wow that looks so much uglier!", and a common response to that is "That's because they wouldn't paint them with such flat, simple colors. They would use much more beautiful and realistic shading and textures, but we don't have any evidence of how exactly they did that". Which kinda makes sense, but it also sounds like pure speculation? What to the experts believe about that?

"Perhaps the question shouldn’t be so much “how could a non-linear system of perspective ever look convincing?”, but “why do we put so much stock in linear perspective?” It is true that the Roman system does not appear to have been quantified mathematically, and so eyeballing involved a fair amount of guesswork and rule-of-thumbing. @@veritasetcaritas I always find it weird how entire cultures don't develop the notion of perspective for centuries. Perhaps the reason is that they are not exposed to straight, perpendicular lines on a daily basis. But I "invented" perspective when I was like 13 years old, just from trying to make my drawings look good and thinking of long, straight objects. I guess I was also exposed to perspective drawings (mostly cartoons). But Romans did see striaght lines in their buildings. Did architects not know perspective? I know architecture uses mostly face-on drawings, but a beautiful shot of the finished product probably does wonders to convince people to give you money to build it. Maybe individuals did independently figure it out, but it just didn't catch on as a culture? I do love the idea of eyeball perspective, it makes so much sense, but those paintings don't have a very good eyeball perspective either.

Blade runner LA does not look like any other cities in our real world except for Asian cities. The current Fremont Tesla plant was originally a GM plant I think and then a Toyota-GM partnership plant. It went from unionized and non unionized though arguably workers were treated better. They also were better employees with the Fremont plant being the worst performing plant until Toyota took over. Infact I don’t think Toyota or any Japanese auto manufacturer had standalone plants until the South Carolina boom but I’m not sure.

Yes in the late 70s and early 80s US-Japanese coroporate partnerships were the thing.

That will need to wait until a later video in this series, when I discuss the origin of cyberpunk. I will defintiely be covering Metal Hurlant and its huge impact on the emergence of cyberpumk, and Mobius will be cited.

why are you not calling them black supremacists because that's what they are. They lie and slander Euro history and inflate and a exaggerate Afro with a willing media trying to make them a superior race.

I wouldnt put my stock into "mainstream academics" my friend. Argumentum ad populum/veracundeum. Instead, use evidence and first principles. Youll find that mainstream history is riddled with problems, although less than these sorts of chaps.

Citing mainstream academics isn't argumentum ad populum or veracundeum. Agumentum ad populum takes the form "X is true because many people believe it to be true", which has nothing to do with citing mainstream academics. Argumentum ad veracundeum takes the form "X is true because authority states it is true", which also has nothing to do with citing mainstream academics. People who say "Don't cite mainstream academics" are usually the same people who say "I don't go to Western medical doctors, I treat my cancer at home with carrots and crystals". Then they die.

@@veritasetcaritas I just love that you A. Didnt understand my point at all. Citing without examining sources is ALWAYS ad veracundeum, unless you admit to provisionality and B. You engaged in ad hominem. I'm a professional research scientist, and although I cite academics, I do not do so unless I track down to the root ALL sources used by another academic, including looking at methodology. Roughly 50% of the time, the trail runs cold on horrific analysis, incongruent methods or just naked assertions. What your response tells me is that you do NOT do academic research. You clearly have no idea just how much junk is in peer reviewed work. None of this is to say you are wrong in your original analysis. My general understanding of the matter indicates you are being commendably rigorous. Dont let the Internet prevent you from getting tips from old timers. Be well.

@@timothyblazer1749 I don't think you've seen my video. I do not cite without examininng sources. In this video I specifically examine critically all the sources used by Twitter user Great House. I check publication dates and different editions of books, I examine footnotes, I check the sources of the sources he cites, I find the complete text of translations he only cited with ellipses. This is a followup video to the previous video I made, ihn which I did exactly the same. ruclips.net/video/UgGGJtuTPt0/видео.html I am fully aware that there is a lot of junk in peer reviewed work. That is why I check the sources I use, and I check the sources other people use. This entire video is doing exactly what you claim I don't do. I have been a university research assistant myself, so I am familiar with the academic process. I suggest you watch the video. Please provide evidence that I engaged in ad hominem.

@@veritasetcaritas not being critical of YOU, friend. I heard you use "mainstream academic" often, and I was simply warning you against having too much trust in that culture. I know you did a very good job, and perhaps I should have led with that. I had assumed you would intuit that from my accolade at the end of my comment, but I think I am a bit too GenX for my own good. :-) You did a very good job citing sources, and even being critical of them. I had no problem except you leaned on "mainstream" a lot in your exposition, and it made me wince a bit. Excellent work, excellent job disassembling your opponent.
